What is Death to Dengue?

The 'Death to Dengue' is a civil society led campaign to curb the rising number of dengue related deaths and to eradicate the disease from Sri Lanka. The drive is a direct response to the recent dengue related deaths of over 250 children over a six month period. This is an estimated 11 child deaths a week with the death count expected to rise unless drastic action is taken to combat the wide spread of the disease. The initial drive will divide Greater Colombo into North & South segments and harness residents to organise themselves into neighbourhood groups to identify and destroy mosquito breeding grounds and disrupt breeding cycles.. Sites being inspected include residential compounds, business premises, abandoned properties and roadside danger zones including drains

Why are we doing this?

Campaign bearing the slogan ‘Death to Dengue – I did it for your child’ ‘Death to Dengue’ is the brainchild of Talavou Alailima, Founder & Managing Director Power World Gyms, who himself has witnessed the effects of dengue first hand. “All three of my children have had dengue. Even my 5 month year old baby got dengue in 2012 and the doctors said there was a 90% chance of losing him. It was a hard fight. All my sons made it through, but not all families are that lucky. The ‘Death to Dengue’ Campaign grew out of my frustration at seeing how dengue is spreading in Sri Lanka. We need to come together and make this change.”

How can you help?

Residents must galvanize neighbours to identify and eliminate vulnerable areas in houses and common areas in neigbourhood on the 5/6 Aug based on area (North/South). Print/photocopy and distribute the flyer with instructions (downloadable from ‘Death to Dengue’ Facebook page or website). Neighbourhood Leaders must alert the ‘Death to Dengue’ Command Centre before Thursday, 3rd of August, of more danger areas in your neighourhood requiring professional help by taking a photograph of the site with a location map and WhatsApp 075-9888663 to 'Death to Dengue' Command Centre or use the Death to Dengue App. Pest Control Companies will clean the area free of charge on the specified day (5th or 6th Aug).
